This podcast is a little bit like a drama show. We created a character named Alice and set a story about her being trapped in a dark room while playing games with her little brother. She is looking for a key to get out by touching every object in the room. Through this drama, we try to create an atmosphere that leads the audience on an  experience together with the character.

During the key searching, we hear a monologue and the sounds of different objects coming from different directions in the room. By touching objects and making noises, the character recalls some memories and even begins to communicate with some objects.

Some thoughts after montage:

The challenges of this project are mainly about two parts, the script writing and the recording.

For script writing, we struggled a lot with the character setting, the age, the identity, the background story and also the storyline itself. Without any script writing and acting experience, we found that it is hard to let the audience understand what happened only by listening without watching and at the same time set the story logically. After some brainstorming and trying to write a very dramatic story, we decided to keep the story a little bit simpler than imagined, a story that is more close to a real day of a real person.

And for recording, before the actual recording, we set a route according to the script and ran over it a few times to make sure everything worked. We also set a few obstacles in the room to pretend the environment the character was in. Even after all the preparations, we always found new problems when we actually started recording, like the speed and volume when speaking, the tone, the emotion…every detail was important. And we tried different ways to reduce the rustle sound by changing the position of the recorder. For the montage, we used the pan effect to create and emphasize different directions of sound.
