In a public speaking course, Kristi read a very popular self-help book, How to Win Friends and Influence People. While this book has helped some people and the author does address some important things, this idea of winning people over and persuading them to agree or like you is actually very harmful.
We’d like to suggest an alternative: Be a friend and connect with people. When we measure our worth by what others think of us, we become codependent people-pleasers, an exhausting and inauthentic way to live. To have relationships are are truly connecting, we must be honest, authentic, and open to conflict and disagreement.
People-pleasing and codependency are human experiences. We will all feel the need to prove our worth or try to control what others think of us. In this episode, listen for some helpful questions to get yourself back on track to connect with others and yourself.
