They discuss the role of supervisors and mentors in their early career, and the importance of these figures in showing them the ropes. Tom also revealed that his father was a police officer, and they were both sergeants at the same time - a unique circumstance which he believes is very rare. The conversation later shifts to the topic of promotion within the police force, and understanding the struggles that accompany such process. Simon explains his experiences with the accelerated promotion scheme, while Tom emphasises the importance of passing promotion exams early in the career.
