Doug MacLean on Draft Day: Scouting, Analytics, and Building Winners Through the NHL Draft

There is no algorithm for leadership. So we ask the world's great coaches how they do it.

Doug MacLean returns to discuss his book, Draft Day: How Hockey Teams Pick Winners or Get Left Behind, which has spent 10 consecutive weeks on Canadian bestseller lists and has gone to a second printing. He explains why winning the draft depends on front-office leadership and an elite global scouting staff, noting the GM rarely makes picks alone and typically follows the scouts’ list. MacLean explores the tension between traditional scouting and analytics, describing analytics as a tool that must be integrated through strong organizational leadership. He shares lessons from Sam Pollock about trading for “futures,” emphasizes that Stanley Cup winners since 1990 (except the most recent) had at least 10 of their own draft picks, and outlines how teams evaluate 18-year-olds by skill and deep character research. He recounts passing on Anze Kopitar for Gilbert Brule and describes the pressures and dynamics at the draft table, plus advice for young players about loving the game, hard work, and the role of parents.
