On this episode of Evolve Mind Body & Soul, host Ellie Barrett talks about perception, which is a really fascinating topic because it affects everything: How we see the world around us, our relationships, how we show up in the world, how we respond and react to things.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Every person has a unique perspective of the world due to their experiences, emotions and beliefs. This means that what one person perceives as reality might be entirely different from what another person sees.
- Perception can be affected by a variety of factors such as culture, upbringing and personal experiences. Two people might see the same situation unfold, but they might interpret it in a completely different way based on their past experiences.
- Talking is the best form of communication because you can hear intonation of the voice and any misconstrued messages can be cleared up quicky and easily providing everyone is grown up, big enough and not afraid to say “that didn’t come across very well, that didn’t sound good.” Often we’re too scared to say that, but if we did, there wouldn’t be all these miscommunications and arguments.
- Our beliefs can be so ingrained in us that we don’t even realise that they’re shaping our emotions. Life is so much easier when you do have awareness of this stuff, when you don’t you wonder why other people are being such an arse about something or why they’re being so reactive. Everyone’s got their own things going on, their own narrative inside their head, and their own perceptions of what’s going on. If you think someone’s being rude to you, ask them outright: “Is everything OK? Have I done something to wind you up/annoy you?” Your perception might be way off, it could be that they’ve had a really bad day so far and it’s nothing to do with you. Often it’s about the other person.
BEST MOMENTS
‘No two people have the same perception.’
‘Our emotions which can colour our perception and make us see the world in a particular way, they can also cloud our judgement and make us misinterpret situations.’
‘Texting is one of the worst because everyone’s perceptions are different and things can get misconstrued.’
‘We can’t control what others say, but if people were clearer about what they actually meant and spoke up and spoke to each other then misconceptions would be cleared up much easier.’
