Why are South Asian people in the UK getting more STIs?

My guest this episode is Dr Rageshri Dhairyawan. In treating her patients in HIV and sexual health in east London, UK, Rageshri noticed that STI diagnoses in South Asian people were growing, and that they have less knowledge of HIV than other groups do. When Rageshri researched what was going on, she was shocked to find that doctors have known about these ethnic inequalities in sexual health since the 1950s. Why hasn’t this disparity been fixed?

In talking with me about how we create a world of free sex, Rageshri discusses what needs to be done so that sexual healthcare reaches different ethnic groups. She’s also working on a book about how some people go unheard in healthcare, due out in 2024.

If you live in London, you can get a sexual health test here. For the rest of the UK, check the NHS website.
