An Orthodox Catechism: Question 112
Swearing reverently by God’s name
Note that the original question in the RBAP edition contains a grammatically incorrect sentence that makes it difficult or impossible to understand. An alternate version of this question has been used that is more coherent. The original question is below:
Q. 112. May a man swear reverently by the name of God?
A. Yes, he may when lawful magistrates or necessity require it. By this means the faith and truth of any man, or thing to be ratified and established, both the glory of God may be advanced and the safety of others procured. This kind of swearing is ordained by God’s word (a), and therefore was well-used by the fathers both in the Old and New Testament (b).
An Orthodox Catechism was written by Hercules Collins in 1680 and is a revision of The Heidelberg Catechism, modified to reflect the views of Particular Baptists.
