Josué 20: Refugios espirituales para muchos en nuestras comunidades.
Josué 20:1:
El SEÑOR habló a Josué diciendo: “Habla a los hijos de Israel y diles: ‘Designen las ciudades de refugio de las que yo les hablé por medio de Moisés; para que pueda huir allí el homicida que mate a una persona accidentalmente sin premeditación, a fin de que sirvan de refugio ante el vengador de la sangre. El que se refugie en alguna de aquellas ciudades se presentará a la puerta de la ciudad y expondrá su caso a oídos de los ancianos de la ciudad. Ellos lo recibirán consigo dentro de la ciudad y le darán un lugar para que habite con ellos. Si el vengador de la sangre lo persigue, no entregarán en su mano al homicida, porque mató a su prójimo sin premeditación, sin haberle tenido odio previamente. Quedará en aquella ciudad hasta que comparezca en juicio delante de la asamblea, y hasta la muerte del sumo sacerdote que haya en aquellos días. Entonces el homicida podrá volver y venir a su ciudad y a su casa, a la ciudad de donde huyó”.

En este capítulo corto vemos cumplirse uno de los mandatos de Dios que le hizo a Israel cuando entraran a la tierra prometida. Ellos debían separar varias ciudades alrededor del territorio y entre todas las tribus debían designar lugares llamados lugares de refugio.
Estas serían ciudades especiales donde serían administradores los levitas que eran la tribu de sacerdotes y líderes espirituales del pueblo. En el capítulo de mañana veremos con más detalle acerca de ellos.
Estas ciudades de refugio eran necesarias para que se pudiera dar tiempo a los jueces y examinar los casos de homicidios y muertes que ocurrieron en Israel. Para que el vengador del familiar muerto no cometiera otro crimen antes de llevar el caso a los tribunales, el que era acusado y perseguido por el vengador podía acudir a estas ciudades y esconderse hasta que su caso fuera analizado. Si la muerte fue causada por un accidente, entonces el causante de la muerte accidental podía permanecer ahí para que la ira del familiar de la víctima no lo matara.
Pero no solamente era para los que eran perseguidos sino también para todo el desdichado, necesitado, todo aquel que era menospreciado en sus ciudades y buscaban cierta clase de dirección o apoyo para poder comenzar de nuevo, para que los sacerdotes y levitas pudieran orientarlo; este es un caso importante y significativo si lo vemos espiritualmente.
Nosotros somos sacerdotes delante de la presencia de Dios. Nuestro hogar debe funcionar como un lugar de refugio para los miembros de nuestra familia y nuestros parientes; que ellos vean en nosotros un liderazgo firme, bajo la gracia de Dios. En el tiempo en que nuestros hijos van creciendo tienen que enfrentarse a muchas pruebas y luchas. Que bueno sería que ellos sintieran esa confianza y seguridad para poder compartir lo que están pasando sin que se sientan acosados o recriminados, sino que puedan recibir esa gracia y misericordia de Dios por medio de nosotros como padres.
Obviamente no se puede omitir la represión y el consejo para mostrarles dónde se están equivocando y las cosas que deben modificar, pero que también encuentren esa compasión y empatía, que vean en nosotros esa voz que los persuada a ver donde se han equivocado y cómo pueden salir de la situación en la que se encuentran. Que encuentren esas palabras de afirmación y amor cuando algunas personas los rechacen por ser cristianos, cuando el enemigo quiera destruirlos.
Ahora, imaginemos que todos los hogares cristianos se convirtieran en ciudades de refugio espiritual para matrimonios en conflicto, para jóvenes que viven en hogares quebrados e inestables, para niños que no tienen un modelo de familia saludable y temeroso de Dios, y que podamos invitarlos a que se refugien en esos hogares y encuentren esa mano amiga, ese consejo sabio basado en los principios bíblicos, que encuentren modelos para poder restaurar sus vidas o familias... ¡nuestras comunidades serían más fuertes!
Es por eso que debemos dar gracias a Dios por los pastores y congregaciones que se han mantenido como congregaciones saludables y temerosas de Dios, donde podemos buscarlas si estamos de viaje en otra ciudad o tenemos que movernos a otro estado o país. ¡Gracias a Dios por esa red de ciudades espirituales de refugio, esa familia extensa que tenemos en todo el mundo en Cristo Jesús!
Si estás pasando por momentos difíciles, hoy pido al Señor que ponga una familia en tu vida para que pueda ayudarte en esos momentos difíciles, o que puedas encontrar una congregación a la que puedas asistir si no tienes una y comiences a integrarte con otras familias que se refugian en Dios.
Si ya estás en una congregación de refugio o tu familia se ha convertido en un refugio, hoy oro a Dios para que el Señor use tu hogar y tu congregación como un lugar de protección, apoyo y guía para ti y para otros.

Joshua 20: Spiritual refuges for many in our communities.
Joshua 20:1:
The Lord also spoke to Joshua, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘Appoint for yourselves cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you through Moses, that the slayer who kills a person accidentally or unintentionally may flee there; and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood. And when he flees to one of those cities, and stands at the entrance of the gate of the city, and declares his case in the hearing of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city as one of them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them. Then if the avenger of blood pursues him, they shall not deliver the slayer into his hand, because he struck his neighbor unintentionally, but did not hate him beforehand. And he shall dwell in that city until he stands before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the one who is high priest in those days. Then the slayer may return and come to his own city and his own house, to the city from which he fled.’ ”

In this short chapter we see the fulfillment of one of God's commands that He made to Israel when they entered the promised land. They were to separate various cities around the territory and among all the tribes they were to designate places called places of refuge.
These would be special cities where the Levites who were the tribe of priests and spiritual leaders of the people would be administrators. In tomorrow's chapter we will see in more detail about them.
These cities of refuge were necessary so that the judges could be given time to examine the cases of murders and deaths that occurred in Israel. So that the avenger of the dead relative would not commit another crime before taking the case to court, the one who was accused and persecuted by the avenger could go to these cities and hide until his case was analyzed. If the death was caused by an accident, then the person that caused the accidental death could remain there so that the wrath of the victim's relative would not kill him.
But it was not only for those who were persecuted but also for all the unfortunate, needy, all those who were despised in their cities and were looking for some kind of direction or support to be able to start over, so that the priests and Levites could guide them; this is an important and significant case if we see it spiritually.
We are priests before the presence of God. Our home should function as a place of refuge for our family members and relatives; that they see in us a firm leadership, under the grace of God. As our children grow up they have to face many trials and struggles. How good it would be for them to feel that confidence and security to be able to share what they are going through without feeling harassed or recriminated, but rather that they can receive that grace and mercy from God through us as parents.
Obviously repression and advice cannot be omitted to show them where they are making a mistake and the things they need to change, but they should also find that compassion and empathy, that they see in us that voice that persuades them to see where they have made a mistake and how they can get out of the situation they are in. May they find those words of affirmation and love when some people reject them for being Christians, when the enemy wants to destroy them.
Now, imagine that all Christian homes became cities of spiritual refuge for troubled marriages, for young people living in broken and unstable homes, for children who do not have a role model of a healthy and God-fearing family, and that we can invite them to take refuge in those homes and find that friendly hand, that wise advice based on biblical principles, that they find models to be able to restore their lives or families… our communities would be stronger!
That is why we should thank God for the pastors and congregations that have remained healthy and God-fearing congregations, where we can look for them if we are traveling in another city or have to move to another state or country. Thank God for that network of spiritual cities of refuge, that extended family that we have around the world in Christ Jesus!
If you are going through difficult times, today I ask the Lord to put a family in your life so that they can help you in those difficult times, or that you can find a congregation that you can attend if you do not have one and begin to integrate with other families who take refuge in God.
If you are already in a refugee congregation or your family has become a refuge, today I pray to God that the Lord uses your home and your congregation as a place of protection, support and guidance for you and for others.
