The 1924 Wolverines brought a cooler breeze to jazz in that year of unleashed improvisation and big personality. Celebrated on the Columbia College radio annually is Bix’s b- day. He had his melodic impressionist style quite distinct from the popular growling muted cornet style and far more free ranging in his notes, like Armstrong. The open horn was also for Bix. He heard a lot of that from ODJB records, whereas Mares of NORK was more in the Oliver camp.
