Doc Cook maybe gets the accolade for most indispensable hit of 1924. The One I Love sung by Jolson here gets an opulent expansive jazz orchestra arrangement. The Southern Stomps from 1923 takes Oliver’s hot jazz into a primal sound not heard elsewhere and not what jazz would become, more like rhythm and blues. Harris breaks the instrumental momentum singing the lament of a jailbird. Bessie Smith had obligatory hits with jailhouse blues and here is Harris’s take on that inescapable genre emphasizing her considerable vulnerability. Santa Claus Blues is so nice we hear it twice.
