Since ancient times, men and women have worn wigs and hair pieces, both as status symbols and as tools of self-expression. New York-based historian Jessica Glasscock joins Amber to talk about her incredible book Wigging Out: Fake Hair That Made Real History which explores the cultural significance of wigs, the wig resurgence in the 1960s and 70s, and their enduring impact on identity as well as fashion and style trends cross-culturally.
Jessica and Amber talk about why wigs are more than just hairpieces, why it's time to move beyond the shame and stigma around wig wearing as well as the origins of hairdressing in the 18th century, the changing preferences for blonde hair down through history and the real truth about Marie Antoinette's hairdo!
