Today in Rob's third instalment of Eknath Easwaran's words to live by, he continues to discuss how we can apply Eknath's learnings to our own paths of discovery, particularly in regards to leading, managing and coaching.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
1) When someone has a desire to do something it is almost like a divine quantum spark. There are key differences between coaching younger children and those who are older and we need to bear this in mind alongside their own personal desires when guiding, leading and coaching.
2) Detachment. If you are attached to a specific outcome then you will always have a significant amount of uncomfortableness in your life. We can create the perfect environment, we are in control of this, but we can't control all outcomes, especially in sport.
3) Serving. Recognise that we are here to serve others. Rob got into football coaching because it was his passion, there were some ego driven decisions for him in this respect. However, now he recognises that actually underneath it all he does what he does to serve others. We need to think about who it is we are serving.
4) Eknath is known well for his mediation. Meditation is something that should be investigated by all as the benefits that can come from it can be transformative in all areas of life.
5) The bigger picture. When we are stuck in the current moment remember that this too shall pass and life is all about the bigger picture. It can be difficult to deal with the situations and times that are difficult and test us. But learn to love what is there and channel positivity, always remembering each day is one day in many, they all weave together to make this bigger picture of your life.
6) ‘The Gap'. This is the gap between stimulus and response. How many times can you recognise that if you take a step back how much better a decision and /or outcome you can achieve. We always have the ability to know there is a gap between stimulus and how we respond, there are very few things that won't be done better by allowing a gap.
7) Set the right goals. Ensure you set goals that are right for you and those that you work with. Appropriate, inspiring and achievable goals are key.
8) Simplicity. Simplicity is genius. 80% of results come from 20% of your activities. We can achieve so much by doing the simple things, we can always add on things and be complex when necessary but simplicity with give you the structure and the fundamentals.
9) Be unshakeable in your fundamentals but be flexible in your non-essentials. There will be values you hold dear as well as things you don't have an opinion on. Make sure you stick firm to your values but are flexible with things that don't affect your core. You don't have to get involved in absolutely everything.
10) Willpower. We can use our willpower however we wish but our will is a tool. Our habits create our character and our character creates our life. The habits we practice and the choices we make then make all the difference in our lives.
11) Everything counts. It's easy to dismiss small things but everything you do counts. You can say a word to somebody and they can remember that for the rest of their life. Sometimes it's the smallest things that make someone feel special, everything counts.
12) Everything is an effect and everything has a cause. The results you get and everything you see has a cause. We are a part of that, how we talked or thought about it and how we respond is what causes things to happen.
