Words of Wisdom for Leaders, Managers & Coaches
‘It is not where we are that matters it is the direction of our travel. Life moves on and changes, everything passes and if we aim in the right direction the journey of life will take us where we want to go'
This fascinating episode is the first of a 12-part series exploring the Calendar of Wisdom by Leo Tolstoy.
We need to lead, manage and coach ourselves because if we can't do it for ourselves we will not be able to do it for others. This podcast provides words of wisdom that can be used to develop change and create a focus on being the best you can be.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Decide very carefully what to read in life - Be aware and carefully select what information you are taking in.
- Have a faith no matter what it is, believe in something - Have a faith, ideally believe in something that is bigger than you if you want to have peace, be happy and have a successful life.
- Serve, live a life of service asking frequently the question, How may I serve? - Living a life of service and being in a symbiotic relationship with others where we give, and we take is where 2 +2 can equal 7
- Use your words carefully and only speak of that which is good - It can be easy to slip into complaining. If you choose your words carefully you can make people feel special and valued.
- Life is a constant battle to do what is right, stay present and aim to do your best at any given moment - We can only do our best in any given moment. It doesn't mean we can't be better in the future and being constantly aware of our ability to choose to do better is part of the process.
- Be kind and love yourself, allow yourself to be human and exist in that state with others - We need to help others to find what's good in themselves. Anger, rage and criticism do not help anybody in the long term, it's about digging deep and finding kindness in ourselves.
- Trust yourself - You are on your own journey riding the crest of your own wave and only you know what's right for you.
- Recognise a divinity in every being - An opposing view is a divine being with their own thoughts, drive and ambitions.
- Be humble - Are the people you like working with humble and have humility or are they dictator types who make sure you know they are responsible for any success?
- Be responsible - Who is responsible for your life? How you respond and your ability to react is a choice you have. Understanding this brings great control over your life.
- Judge not - Condemnation and criticism are patterns of thought stemming from our life experiences. Changing our perspective and listening to others is the key to not making hasty judgements
- Learn from the bad things you encounter as well as the good - We all have negative experiences and reviewing the situation to enable a different reaction.
- Make sure that everything you do has a meaning - It's about giving your process meaning. If we have an identity with meaning we act in alignment with it.
- Memento mori - Develop an understanding of things beyond your daily life. The fear of death is the greatest fear that people have. We are all mortally finite and if we understand this the fear diminishes and we can live life more fully.
- Beware of anger and rage - Don't let anger and rage change your life. We are human beings and are all subject to emotion
- Do the basics well - 80% of your results will come from 20% of your effort. If you hone the activities that produce the best results then success will follow.
- Balance your giving and receiving This should be across all areas of your life and achieving the balance is vital for wellbeing.
