It seems like every other day there’s news of a new video game company being bought by a gigantic corporation to stick in their portfolio of video game studios. This week brought us the news that Square Enix selling off three of its western-based development teams in, Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal, and Square Enix Montreal alongside all of their IP. Meaning that all of their teams and game franchises are gone with them. On top of this, these studios were sold to Embracer Group, a massive holding conglomerate based out of Sweden. While there are no apparent ties to gross political groupings as is the case with Tencent, the Embracer Group has over 124 gaming studios in its portfolio, with over 14,000 employees. This may not be as dangerous as a sell to the likes of Tencent, there still are worries to be had. And that is what we plan to discuss for you today!
