Vanishing Cowboy (Larry W Jones 09/27/2019) (song #7616)

I remember my grandpa riding through the gate

Wondering why beef sold at such a lower rate

I remember with sadness his once famous brand

Lying in his casket with bridle in his hand

It’s like heresy when a legacy has gone away

Good cowhands riding for the brand have gone to yesterday

He’s a vanishing cowboy who rode like the wayward wind

When he grew old he chose dominoes with his friends

(Instrumental)

Grandpa knew days were comin’, he didn’t wonder

His banker issued summons that seemed like plunder

But grandpa was a cowboy, lived the cowboy code

He kept the ranch but had to have the whole herd sold

A four lane divided freeway crosses my grandpa’s ranch

The graveyard worker couldn’t see I was my grandpa’s branch

The dirt he shoveled in would soon grow flowers for his shade

I stood there for hours by a good vanishing cowboy’s grave

It’s like heresy when a legacy has gone away

Good cowhands riding for the brand have gone to yesterday

He’s a vanishing cowboy who rode like the wayward wind

When he grew old he chose dominoes with his friends

He’s a vanishing cowboy who rode for the brand
