Description

Athelflaed was a fascinating woman who lived in late 9th Century England. Her father Alfred the Great and her nephew Athelstan get much of the credit for the foundation of the nation of England, however Athelflaed also played an important role in this. She ruled her kingdom of Mercia in her own right, and led the defeat of several Viking armies.
