Description

On November sixth, a poignant display of white flags on the National Mall honored lung cancer victims, marking Lung Cancer Awareness Month. LUNGevity, a non-profit, organized the event to advocate for more bipartisan support for lung cancer research and screening programs. Despite common misconceptions, sixty-five percent of new lung cancer diagnoses are in individuals with no or only past tobacco exposure. The display also honored veterans who have succumbed to lung cancer. LUNGevitys president, Andrea Ferris, emphasized the urgent need for increased awareness and resources, as lung cancer claims more lives annually than breast, prostate, ovarian, and kidney cancers combined. Cancer survivor and radio host Neal Augenstein urged listeners to talk to their doctors about screening, stressing the importance of early detection through CT scans.
