Description

On November eleventh, a critical deadline arrived for seven states in the American West, as they worked to finalize new agreements for the Colorado River. This vital waterway supplies water to forty million people, and the negotiations are focused on how the river will be managed after the year two thousand twenty-six. Negotiators have been meeting to try and reach a deal, with a possible proposal involving a supply-driven framework based on the rivers historic flows. However, the Colorado River system is facing serious challenges due to drought and overuse, with Lake Mead currently at just over thirty-one percent of its capacity. These important negotiations are also happening at a time when the Bureau of Reclamation, the agency overseeing these talks, is without permanent leadership.
