Description

Dolores Gonzales Elementary School in Albuquerque celebrates its 50th anniversary as the citys first dual-language school. The school, located in Barelas, hosted a fall festival from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM, highlighting its commitment to bilingual education. Today, nearly 60 APS schools offer dual-language programs, reaching over 10,000 students. Principal Parisa Asgharzadeh emphasizes that Spanish is not just a subject but a core part of the learning experience, with students spending half their day in English and the other half in Spanish. The schools dual-language model was inspired by María Dolores Gonzáles, or La Doctora, a trailblazer in bilingual education. Fifty years later, dual-language programs are more popular than ever, demonstrating the enduring value of Dolores Gonzales Elementarys innovative educational model.
