Description

On November ninth, a major winter weather event swept across the United States, bringing intense snowfall and freezing temperatures to the Northern Plains, Great Lakes, and Southern states. The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings, predicting wind gusts up to thirty miles per hour and as much as eighteen inches of rapidly falling snow, including the rare phenomenon of thundersnow. Road travel in northeast Illinois was deemed dangerous to impossible, with snow accumulating faster than three inches per hour. Similar warnings were issued for Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin, where up to a foot of snow was expected. Further south, cold weather warnings were in effect for Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky, with freezing temperatures forecast through Monday morning for a large area stretching from Texas and Oklahoma to Alabama and Georgia. Gardeners were advised to protect tender plants, as the growing season had officially come to an end.
