Trailblazing Women Honored with Long-Overdue DegreesOver five hundred women, some over seventy years after completing their studies, received honorary degrees at a special graduation ceremony. These women, who completed teacher training courses at The Lady Mabel College of Physical Education between 1950 and 1977, were recognized by Sheffield Hallam University following a campaign by Pam Hunt, a former student. Hunt, who became a PE teacher and head of pastoral care, expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating that not having a degree had been a barrier in her career. Other former students, like Janice Hopson and Sybil Wilbraham, described receiving their degrees almost fifty and seventy-three years later as very strange, but quite exhilarating and hadnt fully registered yet. The university clarified that historic teacher training colleges were not allowed to issue degrees, even though their work was at degree level, and a lot of work has gone into rectifying this historical oversight.
