In this episode, we introduce two of our hosts, Dr. Cherrie Olaya and Jane, and learn about their journeys into the world of physics. From early inspirations to the projects they’re working on today, they share stories, insights, and advice for anyone curious about science.
About our hosts:
🔹 Dr. Cherrie Olaya is a postdoctoral researcher at RIKEN (Institute of Physical and Chemical Research), Japan. She earned her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD in Physics from UP Diliman, where she also taught at the National Institute of Physics. Her PhD work focused on developing an optical setup to measure reflectivity and the Goos-Hanchen (GH) shift, enhancing it through beam propagation and tight focusing. At RIKEN, she continues to explore beam displacements as a tool for detecting changes in material refractive indices.
🔹 Jane is a PhD candidate at Johns Hopkins University, USA. She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Physics from UP Diliman, where she also taught as an Instructor. Her Master’s research focused on modeling steady-state wealth distribution in gambling systems. After her time as a research student at the International Centre of Theoretical Physics in Italy, she moved to Johns Hopkins, where she now studies the self-organization of topological defects in liquid crystal phase transitions.
