Thousands of UK drivers may have been wrongly ticketed for speeding due to a four-year-old fault in smart motorway cameras. The issue, which affects every speed camera on smart motorways and some A-roads, causes a critical time delay between when a new speed limit is displayed and when the camera registers that change. This has led to over 36,000 speeding cases being canceled, with 22 police forces halting court cases and speed awareness courses. The problem stems from a ten-second lag where the speed limit signs and cameras are out of sync, leading to over 2,600 innocent drivers being wrongly flagged for speeding since January 2021. National Highways has agreed on a temporary fix and is working with police to identify and directly contact all affected individuals.
