Vicky Martinez has always led with her heart. As a nurse working with babies and mothers, she spent her days nurturing new life, comforting frightened parents, and holding space during some of the most emotional moments a family can experience. Caring for others was not just her job, it was who she was.
Then came the moment when Vicky became the one in need of care.
During one of the most traumatic experiences of her life, Vicky says she left her body and was surrounded by a peace so profound it overwhelmed her. In a moment where fear could have taken over, she felt held, protected, and deeply loved. The pain faded. The chaos quieted. And for the first time, she understood what it meant to be completely cared for without needing to be strong for anyone else.
Vicky shares her near death experience with raw emotion and honesty, speaking from a place of compassion that reflects the life she has lived in service to others. What she encountered changed her forever. It softened how she understands suffering, strengthened her belief in love, and reshaped how she shows up for the families she serves.
In this episode of There and Back Again – Stories of the Other Side, Vicky opens her heart to share a story of survival, healing, and reassurance. Her experience is a reminder that even the caregivers need care, and that love is present, even in our darkest moments.
