Eaton Fire Residents Urge Governor Newsom for Safe Return Homes; Asbestos and Lead Contaminants PersistResidents affected by the Eaton Fire in California are calling on Governor Gavin Newsom and officials to ensure their homes are free from contaminants, as recent tests reveal high levels of asbestos and lead in the Altadena area. Eaton Fire Residents United, an advocacy group, reports that thousands of homes remain unsafe for families to return to. Nicole Maccalla, an Altadena resident and USC faculty member, shared that out of fifty homes tested after remediation, six out of ten still pose health risks due to lead or asbestos. Homeowners also face delays or denials of insurance claims, leading Representative Judy Chu to urge for a Clearance Before Occupancy standard and an Ash Zone declaration to protect residents from toxins and provide necessary assistance.
