Originally at the entrance to the port sat a tower of granite with a glass flame at the top, and in it, the fires flickered to announce to ships they had arrived. In those days, the print shops pressed pamphlets out by hand. They would send runners out to the lighthouse to wait for any news as the ships came in from afar...
