In this episode of the Training 4 Influence podcast Tammy sits down with Taye Training Facilitator, James McCarthy, to discuss his five key learning points from the Managing Challenging Behaviour course.
Outside of facilitating training with Taye, James is a Youth Work Manager at a local authority. He has over ten years’ experience in the development and implementation of individualised packages of support, which have included increasing independent living skills, management of emotional wellbeing, acknowledgement of offending behaviour and harm reduction techniques in relation to substance misuse and self-harming behaviours.
James specialises in service user focused training; identifying and developing skills to communicate, support and manage high-risk service users with multiple needs, implementing a person-centred approach, in order to develop and maintain productive relationships with each service user.
James has both a passion for and is a natural when it comes to working with people with a range of complex needs; facilitating their empowerment and supporting them to achieve their potential and recognising their own capabilities.
This episode will briefly cover five key points from this course:
The Course
Delegates learn how to listen to a customer in a more effective manner, gathering the information necessary to select the correct course of action. To test the level of co-operation that can be predicted from a service user, participants learn the important technique of “generating co-operation”.
We also look at common difficult behaviours that are being faced and how these can be managed by following the SMART principles, enabling staff to remain calm, supportive and professional, while utilising highly effective yet non-abusive skills.
To equip staff with the ability to recognise early signs of challenging behaviour and to also support staff to build a “toolbox” of options that they feel confident in using to overcome the behaviour and work with the service user in a positive way.

To provide context for those listening in the future, as this episode is published we are currently around nine weeks into the COVID-19 UK lockdown. Schools are closed, many employees are working from home and hospitals are at capacity.
While this podcast has been in the plans for a while, COVID-19 has changed the timetable of its delivery. Instead of starting by delving into the Training 4 Influence methodology, we realise it is more important to start this podcast with a series delivering bitesize learning, derived from our induction courses, for those frontline professionals needing further support during these times.
Frontline professionals regarded as 'critical workers' are currently working under unprecedented circumstances - with staff levels falling and government regulations changing daily, additional support is vital as many new, inexperienced or recently retired people are being asked to take on key roles.
