Description

In this episode Tammy will be talking to Wendy Thorogood about how she built and maintained her emotional resilience within her lengthy career as a nurse. They discuss: Wendy’s early years as a nurse and the challenges she faced during them, the importance of supervision in building your emotional resilience, and how we can support our colleagues whose resilience may be suffering.

Welcome to series 3 of the Training 4 Influence Podcast. This series, as requested by you, our listeners, will be focused on emotional resilience, how to build and maintain it, and why it’s so important for those working in the criminal justice, social care and charity sector.

Without emotional resilience frontline professionals are at risk from suffering from burnout, vicarious trauma and significant mental health issues - we’ll be sitting down with guests, in different job roles, to hear real stories of both avoiding burnout and rebuilding after it. Our aim is to share positive thoughts and ideas that will inspire, protect and motivate frontline professionals.

Wendy Thorogood is a retired Designated Nurse Consultant for children with NHS Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) based in Dorchester. She trained at St Guy's hospital in London, specialising in child and adult nursing intensive care and cardiac and renal transplants.

Wendy is chair of the Association of Child Protection Professionals. She delivered the national leadership programme for safeguarding for the Department of Health and worked directly with the NHS Confederation in relation to current changes, including: providing assurance that current and future providers of services are compliant in relation to safeguarding national and local standards; working with Lead Commissioners and the performance team to develop agreed key performance indicators and safety metrics for providers; and identifying and taking appropriate action on key risks and issues across commissioned services that may affect safeguarding of children and young people.

We hope you enjoy listening to this discussion about why, after decades of experience within the sector, both Tammy and Wendy believe in the importance of emotional resilience.
