The first episode in a two-part series, we begin by looking back over 2024 and taking stock of our life orientation and begin by asking a question: what is a life well-lived?

Today’s episode asks you to look at how you’ve been living and the boxes you’ve been checking and to consider what is most important. It gives you a new frame of reference and puts the past year through this lens. Then the episode on the 24th will give you the tools to create your own framework of boxes to check that lead toward the life that you love, which that might not match society’s.

Exercise: Your goals are only strategies

Write down three goals you had for 2024.

Then write down the feeling that you thought you would have when you achieved those goals.

If you didn’t achieve those goals, write down the feeling you intended to have by achieving those goals.

Close your eyes and bring the feeling wanted to life.

Once you’ve felt the deep satisfaction, the connection, the joy, the freedom, the excitement or whatever emotion comes up for you, write it down – take a minute to describe it.

Now take what you wrote and turn it upside down.

Ask yourself if you've been checking boxes that align with what is really important for you. Consider whether you are orienting your life toward the feeling you want to have. Then review the goals you set - do they lead toward the feeling you want to have?

Exercise: Are your goals aligned with what you truly want?

Look back at the three 2024 goals you listed above. When you look at those goals, ask yourself:

  1. Did I get the feeling I thought I would get from achieving these goals? Has that feeling persisted?
  2. What did these goals prevent me from saying yes to?
  3. Do I have a persistent or recurring empty or hollow feeling in life?

Exercise: Getting clear on what's working and what's not to start designing your own boxes in your reimagined life

  1. What is the feeling you most want to have at the end of your life?
  2. What would you regret about this if your life stopped right now?
  3. Where do you feel unfulfilled in your life? What are you longing for?
  4. What in your life is wasting your time?  
  5. What is draining your energy?
  6. What is holding you back?
  7. Where are your biggest sources of stress?
  8. Where are you not saying no, and need to say no? 
  9. What does not saying no prevent you from saying yes to?
  10. What makes you feel alive or like you are on fire?
  11. What do you want more of in your life?
  12. What is working for you?
