For so long, I thought love meant giving everything I had to everyone else—being totally self-sacrificing, putting myself last, and numbing out with alcohol when the exhaustion and resentment crept in. I wore burnout like a badge of honor.
But when I let alcohol go, I had to completely relearn what love actually looks like. I had to figure out how to take care of myself in ways that didn’t involve escaping. The way I loved myself changed. The way I loved my family changed. And I became the kind of person I actually wanted to be.
