Have you ever struggled to do something you really wanted to do because you just didn’t feel confident doing it?
Or maybe there’s something you really want to do, but you stop yourself from starting because you look around and see countless other people doing that same thing, and you tell yourself that you’ll never be able to do it as well as they are. Or that there isn’t room for you in that space.
So many times we hold ourselves back from doing the very thing we were made to do because we don’t feel confident.
But – what if you looked at confidence through a different lens.
Mel Robbins defines confidence as “a willingness to try”.
Ed Mylett defines confidence as “keeping the promises you make to yourself”.
Confidence comes when you take action. It doesn’t start with a feeling. The first time you do something, you’re not going to feel confident doing it. The second time you do something, you’re not going to feel confident doing it.
In fact, you’re probably going to feel a little bit of imposter syndrome. You’re probably going to feel like you have no business doing what you’re doing, and you’re going to wonder if the people watching you have figured out yet that you’re terrible and you have no business doing what you’re doing.
But feeling a little bit of imposter syndrome isn’t actually a bad thing. It means you’re stretching yourself – it means you’re doing something outside your comfort zone. It means you’re growing and challenging yourself to do something that’s just a little outside of your reach – just a little beyond what you’ve ever done before. And that’s a good thing.
And when you keep showing up, over and over, week after week – as you consistently follow through on keeping the promise you made to yourself – that's when you’re going to build the confidence.
