As I've been navingating a challenging situation this week, I was reminded of the different ways different animals respond to storms. Animals are instinctive - they know when a storm is coming. When cows sense a storm is coming, they take off running away from the direction the storm is coming from. They try to outrun the storm. But they are rarely successful. The storm inevitably catches up to them, and as they continue running with the storm, they end up spending more time in the storm than they really would have needed to. When buffalo, on the other hand, sense a storm coming, they turn to face the storm head-on. And once the storm reaches, they take off running INTO the storm. They reach the other side of the storm so much faster because they aren't trying to outrun it. They accept that it's coming, they embrace it, and they face it head-on.
The challenges we face in life are the same way. When we try to outrun them, we end up expending far too much energy trying to avoid them. And they eventually catch us anyway. When we decide to accept them, and we face them head on and intentionally move through them, we are able to make it through them so much more quickly.
