Tea Party leader Michael Johns joined Healthcareonomics for episode 10, the final show of 2015. In addition to being a Tea Party leader and founder, Michael is a healthcare executive who was a speechwriter for President George H.W. Bush and policy analyst for The Heritage Foundation.

Michael Johns discussed a variety of topics including how the premise of Healthcareonomics correlates with the Tea Party’s viewpoint on healthcare…

“I think it correlates very closely. The Tea Party has been so focused, I think understandably so, we’ve been very focused on trying to fight back Obamacare for a bunch of reasons. Predominantly, because I think we all understand, as Obama himself once said when he was running for the senate in Illinois, that the goal of this is really, it has very little to do with healthcare. It has to do with power, and centralizing the provision and the coverage of health insurance in the hands of the federal government. The problem with that, as we’ve pointed out repeatedly is there’s not really any historical example of that working well in the world, and there’s a lot of horror stories certainly that most Americans have heard of from Europe and Canada and what not.”

On the complexity of the health insurance industry…

“Let’s face it…there is a debate in this country that’s unresolved as to whether health insurance is a private or a public sector commodity. We want the best, it seems to me, of both worlds. We want all the innovation access to high-quality new drug development, new surgery techniques, cutting-edge medical devices. I want to see all that stuff expanded substantially. That comes by really incentivizing entrepreneurship and the private sector to continue developing those, which means they have to be profitable. If there’s no incentive to do it, it’s never going to happen. Secondly, understandably, the American people want some degree of security with their health insurance.”
