Episode 008 Show Notes

Origin Story

When David was in high school, his dad came home from a business trip looking tired and worn out. When David asked if there was an easier way to earn a living, his dad replied that everybody has to work their whole life. "It is just the way the world works."

Spafford rejected that idea and decided that he would find a better way for himself.

In college, computers fascinated him, and he ended up taking a class to learn the coding language Basic (which had nothing to do with his major). He ended up starting a technology company named Megahertz. Several years later his company sold for over $400 Million.

His advice:

How to develop an idea?

Before he made it big, he tried 2-3 other ideas that he didn't have a passion for and they were miserable failures.

It is important start with something that you are passionate about and figure out a way to build a scalable business around it; instead of wanting to build a business and trying to find your passion from there.

Spafford followed his passion and he had fun while doing it. On top of the passion, you have to be driven to make it big.

What keeps you going?

He does the things that make him happy. "Being bored is ridiculous! There are so many things to learn. We should all bounce through life having a wonderful time."

Now he is working on Great Basin Scientific

What are the most important Traits in Entrepreneurs?

How do you know that you are working for the right reasons?

Money is not the measure of a human being. If what you are doing passes the 12 points in the BSA Scout Law, then you are probably doing it right.

The Scout Law

A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly,
courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty,
brave, clean, and reverent.
