Ya’ll are in for a treat this week. By now, you’ve most certainly heard that Food Network has fired the butter industry’s majority shareholder, Paula Deen. During a deposition for a lawsuit brought against her by a former employee, Deen admitted to using the N-word and to wanting black employees to dress as slaves for an Antebellum-themed wedding. You thought your job sucked, imagine being her PR agent right about now. The woman who filed the suit, Lisa Jackson claims racial slurs were used regularly at the restaurant Deen and her brother own, and that she was sexually harassed by Deen’s brother, Earl W. “Bubba†Hiers. Oh, and by the way, Jackson is white! Of course, Paula’s people cooked up a heavily edited apology which landed on YouTube, but the damage was already done and she’s been fired from the network. Twitter is going nuts with parody memes like the one at the left and with funny recipe names like “Coon On The Cob” and “Swing Low Sweet Chariot Pie” that are hashtagged, “PaulasBestDishes”. Dennis brings up these hilarious tweets and we have a helluva laugh reading a few of them on air.
Before that though we MUST talk about the surprising reversal by Microsoft of the DRM policies on the Xbox One. To a certain extent, when a new product comes out and there’s negative feedback, a company can absorb that and go about their daily business with a, “If you don’t like it, tough shit” attitude. But at some point the backlash can be too much to ignore. Such is the case here. I think there were just too many angry gamers and shit-talkin’ online for Microsoft to ignore. And of course, they spin it by claiming they’re “listening to our feedback” but we know what’s really going on here… they thought they could get away with it, but were called out on it. We agree on the show that the damage is already done. It’s the principal of the thing. They shouldn’t have pulled this bullshit in the first place. And it looks like most of you agreed according to comments on our Facebook page and the We Ask You Poll results.
Paula Deen wasn’t the only famous face to get shit-canned this week. Shailene Woodley who’d been cast as Mary Jane Watson in Marc Webb’s THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, got cut from the film after shooting just a few scenes. Webb says he felt Peter Parker’s love life was complicated enough and wanted to streamline the story. But the fact that the role of MJ will be recast for the third film leads one to believe that perhaps Woodley wasn’t very good? Or just didn’t fit the part? Whatever the reasoning, Spidey-fans will have to wait until 2016 to see Peter’s favorite redhead on screen.
And the deep-voiced, snazzy-dressed spokesman (and founder) of Men’s Wearhouse, George Zimmer was abruptly fired by the company’s board of director’s this past week. Try that on for size… the guy gets fired from the company he started! We were immediately reminded of Norman Ozborn. Hopefully Zimmer doesn’t dawn any green armor and go on a killing rampage. Although, his costume would likely be very well tailored.
And Japan seems to always be on the forefront of kink. “Worming” seems to be a growing trend in the country’s schools. And it’s a growing concern to eye doctor’s as well. You see, worming is the act of licking someone’s eyeball for pleasure. As you can imagine this could lead to a number of health issues, and it has. Several students came down with pink eye as a result of worming. I wonder, what does an eyeball taste like. Well, I wonder a lot of things about this story. I’ll never know though because I will probably never lick someone’s eye. At least, not on purpose or for free.
Now I’m off to the store to pick up a few things. Gonna bake Paula’s Mulatto Marble Cake. Best dishes ya’ll!
