It's an immutable law of the business universe. You pay for everything. There's no such thing as a free lunch. But you have the choice about whether to pay in time or money.
There are a lot of great reasons to pay in time. When you're first starting out you might be "time rich" with a lot of spare time to devote to your business. You might be "money poor" and having to bootstrap your business as you grow. It's important to learn how to do all of the essential tasks of your business to make sure you understand it all.
However, we often lean too much into spending our time. We can be stubborn. And perfectionists. Get caught up in 'grind culture.' And we ignore the opportunity cost that comes with paying in time.
We need to be asking constantly "is this the most valuable way for me to be using my time?" If I pay someone to help with my website, or do laundry, or answer phones....what can I do with that time?
The cure is thinking of spending money as an investment. Is this a good investment? What's the return? If you spend the 2 hours each week you used to be doing laundry going out and marketing instead, would you make more money than you're paying the laundry service?
The same thing applies when it comes to purchasing business information and tools. Ask yourself "what's the return on investment for this?"
That's why we feel our (new!) Business Foundations course is so valuable for business owners (and wannabes). It costs about what one patient going through a plan of care brings in for a business. So if you think ANYTHING in the course has the ability to get you one more patient, it's paid for itself. That's what we mean in thinking of things as an investment.
