Description

Your mentorship (or lack of) will shape the entire rest of your career.  It's that important - especially if you have less than five years of experience in pelvic health.

And let's get real.  You aren't 'owed' or entitled to mentorship.  Many employers won't value your professional development the way you will.  You are only 'owed' what the employer has promised - no more, and no less.

As a mentee, there are a few things to be thinking about to get the most out of mentorship.

  1. It's important!  Where you start your journey in pelvic health will directly impact the entire rest of your career.  Make sure you're prioritizing mentorship.  Ask questions in your interview.  This is a challenge at non-specialty practices, so ask who you'll be learning from.  And if it isn't being done, you can hold your employer accountable.
  2. Put in the Work.  Mentorship is not passive, it's a two-way street.  In this 'sode we talk about how to ask better questions, take notes in the moment, prepare for your meetings and make the most out of your mentorship time.  Mentorship isn't just sitting back and absorbing, it's an active process that requires your work and participation.  You'll get out what you put in.
  3. Be Willing to Learn.  This can be a challenging one!  Mentorship means constructive criticism and you'll need to improve, which can sometimes be difficult to hear.  Watch yourself - is your initial reaction to say 'yeah, but....' whenever your mentor has feedback?  And once you learn something new, try it...on everyone!  Even if you aren't sure, you'll learn so much faster how to apply your new skill to related patients or areas.
