It's a phenomenon: Every band in the world seems to think that they are amazing live. The greatest thing since sliced bread.
Unfortunately, most bands actually are pretty average, at best!
Bands seem to fall into three categories:
1) The rowdy savages who go berserk on stage.
This is probably my favourite, but as we discuss in this weeks episode of the Your Band Sucks (At Business) podcast, beast mode doesn't always equal awesome.
2) The passive shoe gazers who detest eye contact.
Sure, you can watch this band play their music while they seemingly conceal all human emotion, or you can watch paint dry. The choice is yours!
3) The mixed bag.
You got a little of A, and a little of B.
Your drummer's going full William Wallace but your singer looks like he's reading the lyrics from a leather bound book. Meanwhile your bassist is imitating Gene Simmons, but the guitarist is somehow shrinking so small that their skinny jeans might fall off.
Believe or not, this ones the worst. You aren't pleasing the people who want a rowdy show, and you aren't convincing the people who want an intimate gig.
So what's the solution? Choreographing a stage show.
