Ken and Carla reconvene for their weekly Beach Talk. Thanksgiving is coming. Carla shares her perspective on the signing ceremony at the White House making the bi-partisan Infrastructure legislation the law of the land. Along with some 800 mayors, governors and legislators standing close to the President is Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg. On Carla's recommendation, Ken watched the documentary now streaming on Amazon Prime, Mayor Pete. They share their perspectives on the film. They turn to a conversation to Thanksgiving - a tradition both of them cherish. They relate their ambivalence around the American exceptionalism narrative that props up the holiday for many, acknowledging well documented abuses in history. Many, it appears, would happily erase these truths from the history books. Not here. Ken brings up the Doctrine of Discovery, explained in a book called Unsettling Truths by Mark Charles. For Ken and Carla, The essence of Thanksgiving is gratitude for an abundant harvest, now in. They celebrate the anticipation of time to embrace family, friends, neighbors, home and table.
