4X4 MIKE NICHOLS PT. 2 OF 4: MEDIOCRE, SHE WROTE
HEART BURN & POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE
Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson playing fictional versions of Nora Ephorn and Carl Bernstein, written by one of the funniest women on the planet at the time? Directed by Nichols? SIGN US UP, right? Gosh, there is a lot to unpack on this episode.
HEART BURN (1986) When Mike Nichols collaborated with Ephron to adapt her thinly-veiled bombshell of a memoir about her marriage and divorce from Carl Bernstein, it seemed like a perfect match! The urbane and witty Nichols paired with the urbane and witty Ephron. It could not miss! But it kinda does. Why? We go over a lot of the issues plaguing this production as it made its way to screen.
Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine playing fictional versions of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds? In a zippy Hollywood comedy about substance abuse directed by Nichols, written by one of the funniest women on numerous planets at the time,? Made at the dazed hangover end of Hollywood's legendary cocaine-period of the 1980s? SIGN US UP, right?
Please see the Heart Burn paragraph and and replace "Nora" and "Ephron" with "Carrie" and "Fisher" and you may notice a theme, when we talk POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE (1990). Why Nichols elected to focus on a nearly-nonexistent plot in Fisher's memoir is a mystery we try to unravel as much of her brilliant book is simply not in the movie.
Everything theoretical about these movies is fantastic, making them seem, on paper, as must-see productions. So what goes wrong? We are joined by saucy songstress Andi again to once again investigate.
