Last weekend, Petr Yan beat Cory Sandhagen via unanimous decision for the UFC interim bantamweight title at UFC 267 in Abu Dhabi, and I had front row seats in his corner.
I am extremely grateful to have been involved in the preparations for this fight, and the memories of this experience will be cherished forever!
I did record a solo episode trying to sum up the experience...but it was pretty lacklustre if I'm honest.
So I thought, "Who would I love to have a conversation with, that will ask genuine questions and bring out the best of me through describing and sharing this monumental journey?"
Enter Jamie O'Donnell.
Jamie is a friend, a colleague, and an awesome guy with great conversational and communication skills. We were also due for a catch-up, so I reached out to him to record an episode. The plan was to record a couple of different conversations over the course of an hour, to drop them as separate episodes. Well, we recorded for over 3 hours.
Enjoy these insights into how I started working with Petr Yan, along with intimate details of what it was like being immersed in a full fight camp in Russia prior to his Fight of the Night performance in an epic battle that will surely be a Fight of the Year contender.
This is the first of those conversations, which will be released in the coming weeks.

"I shouldn’t be in the position I am right now."
The odds were stacked against me:
● Poor family on welfare, eldest of 6 kids, parents didn’t work, abusive step-dad, no electricity or running water for a 6 years period of my life
● Caught up with the wrong crowd, stealing, drugs, skipping school
● At 14 years old, I sat on a bus for 3 days with $50 in my pocket, to travel to the next State over West, to begin a new life in the workforce - 2000
