In this episode we invite Gaby James, a philosopher from the University of Cape Town, to talk to us about why it is that money doesn’t make us happy.
In South Africa, with so many people living in poverty, an increase in income to take care of basic needs is obviously beneficial, but after a certain level of income, increased wealth doesn’t lead to increased happiness. Unhappy billionaires exist.
Philosophy asks us to critically examine our lives and critically ask ourselves questions such as, “is this good for me, does it make me happy, what is happiness?” Gaby talks about a few models for happiness, including whether happiness means to experience only pleasure, or whether it is to live a meaningful existence?
Perhaps it is having the freedom to self determine, and live an authentic existence? These are questions we all need to answer for ourselves. One thing is certain, money can't provide meaning on its own.
