Book 5 of the Bridgerton series gives us a chance to talk about mental health in romance novels. In part one of Julia Quinn’s To Sir Phillip with Love, we examine what makes this book different from the previous four. Taylor and Lydia dive into introspective characters and their random thoughts, the epic Bridgerton bros scene, and parallels with earlier books. Tay goes into unnecessary tangents about the British Museum, we talk setting and trauma, and Eloise and Phillip discover that meeting someone IRL for the first time is “80% stutter, 20% gold.”
CW: suicide, depression, childhood abuse
Coming up: Part 2 continues the conversation about portrayals of mental illness in historical and romance novels and Philip’s struggles to be a good father. Ya know, lighthearted stuff. Tune in next week to hear Lydia’s two scenarios for a modern Phillip and Eloise and Tay’s reading recommendations!
