Welcome to the next installment of the Anesthesia Patient Safety podcast hosted by Alli Bechtel. This podcast is an exciting journey towards improved anesthesia patient safety.
One of the most common patient monitors is the pulse oximeter. In the operating room, it creates a constant beeping sound that reflects the patient’s oxygen saturation during surgery and anesthesia care. Today on the show, we take a closer look at the relationship between pulse oximetry and skin tone. Tune in as we discuss the New England Journal Article by Sjoding and colleagues, “Racial Bias in Pulse Oximetry Measurement” and the next steps to help keep patients safe with appropriate monitoring.
