This is SPARTAN!!! And David Mamet Month is coming to a close. We end the first Mamet Month (so there will be more Mamet month's to come? You betcha!) with his 2004 action thriller, Spartan, starring Val Kilmer, Derek Luke, William H. Macy, Ed O'Neill, Tia Texada, and basically the entire cast of State and Main—so we really come full circle.

But before we go to the desert, we announce NEXT MONTH'S THEME: 3rd films in a franchise:

What else did we watch this week? Dre kicks off with Amazon Prime's The Vast of Night, a little science-fiction period film with a lot of listening. While Goodman watched two movies: Spider-man: Far From Home and its director, Jon Watt's (more or less) first film, Cop Car, so he can see if Marvel picked the right director for the job.

Then we get into Spartan and discuss Mamet's script and direction, the cast—including Val Kilmer and his top 5 performances, and Geoff Pierson who also starred in The Wrong Missy (with a bonus review from Goodman)—all the Mamet regulars (including his brother and two daughters), and give a special remembrance for Morris Lamore.

In the BOOM (Based On Other Movies) test kitchen, Goodman cooks up an Instant Pot quarantine classic: Mushroom Risotto

Can you name the film?

Then swing your chain, walk your dog and join us on The Quote Parade!

Coming up next week, we kick off a new theme for September with David Fincher's first film (and what was almost his last): Alien 3.
