When we consider the time, effort and outcome - should we bother anymore?
Is the appraisal another business habit that should be retired in 2021?
Or with thought, and a revitalised approach can it be upgraded and be a force for good.
You'll hear a case study of what Adobe have done instead of the appraisal, take note of the numbers, especially if you need some social proof to reboot things in your organisation.
We consider the 'appraiser' and the 'appraisee'. Yes - a made up word.
What if the appraiser is untrained or worse, a bully?
Money - that's a biggie, why bother if it isn't about you earning more?
Performance - ahhh is that why we are bothering isn't it!
 An appraisal has the lofty goal of improving performance. So what if a very different thing occurs.
We argue, well we agree, that perhaps the appraisal that exits in most organisations is one that encourages something else, something more scary that you may never have realised.

What do your top performers, the mavericks, the 'intrapreneurs' need?

You will be left with two big things to focus on and improve for when you have your next appraisal, or 360 degree appraisal.
Ironic that its 360 degrees, as appraisals are usually every 365 days, so it comes up short if you allow me to mix my units of measure!
