The legendary Joe Booker, “Broadway Joe,” joined me on the show this week! A native of South Carolina, Booker shared something that he doesn’t tell many: he was adopted at seven months old. Growing up in a very diverse childhood, he was impacted by the passion for sports at a young age. Booker started his journalism career in the military in 1976, as an announcer in the Armed Forces Korean Network. After leaving the military, Booker earned his associate’s degree from Arkansas State University. The next period for him included Falcon Jet, where he shared one of his many stories with me (55:15), including this lesson for all the young people, “If somebody is telling you that you’re lucky to be at a job, you need to be looking for another job.” By working nights at the Power 92 radio station, Booker and his team have created a legacy that will forever last in the state of Arkansas. “Always have a backup plan” is one of the biggest things Booker wants young people to remember, as well as “follow your dream,” but have a variety of things that you can be good at so you’ll always have something to lean on, and don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
With the opportunity of a lifetime, Booker shared with me his first football coaching position, with a bit of a twist (25:25), which has led him to have his own youth football team, “The Mighty Vikings,” which has been a part of Arkansas for over 25 years now. A man of many values and passions, his love for the community will never be overshadowed, whether it’s the ability to let the people of Arkansas call in and speak on his show, his Power 92 Jammers charity basketball team which has raised over two million dollars, and his annual Christmas food drive. Over the last 30 years, Booker and his team have transformed the radio world for the Natural State like never before. Awarded with the prestigious NAB Marconi Radio Award for a medium market station of the year in the nation, Booker told me he owes all his accomplishments to God and his family as nothing is possible without them. “You always have to have your hand open. You can’t get anything with your hands being closed, and you can’t give anything with them closed”. “Get blessings and pass them on,” Booker told me, and said that he wants to be remembered that he gave (1:02:43). Catch the Broadway Joe Morning show, Monday- Saturday 6AM-9AM, The Broadway Joe talk show Thursday’s at 9AM-10AM, and watch the Broadway Joe video show Sunday mornings at 2AM on the local CW. A huge shout out to the state of Arkansas from Mr. Booker, who thanks everyone for giving the lead dog love for so many years, and HOOTIE-HOOO!!!
