Former NBA player Ronnie Brewer joined me on the show this week. Born in Portland, Oregon, where his father Ron Brewer played for the Portland Trailblazers. Ronnie, surrounded by a competitive nature, strive to be better than his siblings at everything. At a young age, Ronnie and his family moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas. A defensive power machine at Fayetteville High School (21:05), Ronnie complimented everything a coach wanted out of a player. A four-star coming out of high school with offers from Kansas, Uconn, Arkansas, and Oklahoma State, a decision of a lifetime, Ronnie decided to stay home and become a Razorback. The language of the game became an immediate change for Ronnie, but it was something he easily adapted to. His game at Arkansas was quickly recognized, All-SEC Freshman Team, and before his career ended he finished with a couple of All-SEC teams. Ronnie talked to me about his strengths on the court, and the very first thing he brought up was his defensive game, and how big communicating is to be a great defender. His father did not want him to follow in his footsteps, but Ronnie saw it as making his own legacy. After three years in Fayetteville, Ronnie decided it was time to take the next step in life. Ronnie entered his name in the 2006 NBA draft and was selected with the 14th pick to the Utah Jazz, by the late great Jerry Sloan (31:06). His NBA career was rocky, and his hefty relationship with Coach Sloan left Ronnie wondering where did he fit on the team as a rookie. Apart from some memorable teams, Ronnie told me what the mindset is as a player, and how the mindset is always to win a championship. Spending eight years in the NBA, Ronnie finished his playing career in the G-League. Ronnie talked to me about this spectrum, and why fans don’t understand how good these players actually are. Ronnie has been able to accomplish many things, but I think what he’s most proud of is helping others. Now back in Fayetteville, Ronnie has decided to give back as much as possible to the place that made him by starting the Ronnie Brewer Foundation. Ronnie has also taken over the role of an assistant coach for the Fayetteville High School boys basketball team and is also an assistant coach for the Woodz Elite EYBL team. A great episode with vital advice, I hope you guys enjoy it! God blessed.
