University of Buffalo men's basketball player Brock Bertram joined me on the show this week! Born in Apple Valley, Minnesota, Brock had a passion for basketball at a young age. The Minnesota native inherently idolized the Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett, who spent a lot of time with the Minnesota Timberwolves! Brock is literally a stand out person, listed at 6-11, and Brock has used every inch of that height to the fullest.
Brock talked to me about how vital it is to always remember where he came from, and how Apple Valley shaped him into who he is today. Brock did the complete bodywork needed to reach his goals, and he succeeded at the high school level. A three-star coming out of Apple Valley High, Brock received offers from Buffalo, La Salle, Miami (OH), Texas Tech, and Wisconsin-Green Bay. Brock helped earn his high school’s well-rounded program two state titles and also played with pro Gary Trent, Jr. (Toronto Raptors), Tyus Jones (Memphis Grizzlies), and Tre Jones (San Antonio Spurs).
Brock and I also talked about the evolution of the center position, and how awesome it was to see someone like Nikola Jokic win the NBA MVP award. Brock talked to me about the rigors of being a D-1 college athlete, and how one of the most important things for him to work on was his body. Brock began his college career at 265lb, and now is at 240lb.
A standout in the classroom, Brock recently was named to the all-Mac academic team, and this isn't his first time earning this honor. A video game lover himself, 2k, Madden, and Fortnite are his go-to games.
Brock mentioned something to me he is very proud of. This past spring he earned his Master's degree, and he is the first member of his family to do so. Brock is a first-generation college graduate, and we know he’ll keep doing great things! Brock ended with this, “I want to be known as a guy who loves his teammates, loves the program, and works hard.” Enjoy the episode!
