WJTV 12 nightside reporter Gary Burton Jr., joined me on the show this week! Born and raised in Little Rock, AR, with an immediate love for wanting to be on television Gary envisioned becoming a journalist at a young age. As a die-hard sports fan, Gary heavily supports the Phoenix Suns and Baltimore Ravens, but his love as a fan also translated to an athlete as well. A standout football and basketball player for Maumelle High School, Gary helped lead Maumelle to the basketball state finals, and he eventually ended up at Arkansas Tech University playing football. Majoring in Broadcast Journalism, Gary ran a sports radio talk show with a great friend while in school. Gary talked to me about understanding that being an athlete wasn’t going to work for him, and that is what allowed him to be free throughout college. A brother of Alpha Phi Alpha, Gary’s love for his fraternity, is beyond amazing. Gary not only gained life experiences within his fraternity, but his determination allowed him to succeed at the next level. Now with the experience of a lifetime, Gary has been blessed to work for WJTV 12, in Jackson, Mississippi. A devoted sports fan turned news reporter, Gary has fallen in love with his role and loves that he is still very close to home. Gary ended with a very special message, “I want people to know that my name is Gary Burton Jr. and I’m a junior because of the man who raised me, I am my father’s legacy, God rest his soul”. Gary told me he wants people to remember that he has always stayed true to himself and was always him, and that never changed. A very vital episode, and the longest episode ever! I enjoyed every single second of it, and I even got to be interviewed myself at the end! (1:23:54) God bless everyone, enjoy!
